April 1, 1963 – August 18, 2025
Timothy Dwayne Simmons, affectionately known as “Tim” or “Denzel,” was the son of the late Horace Simmons, Sr., and Elizabeth McNeil Simmons. He was born on April 1, 1963, in Moore County, NC. He was the youngest of twelve children born to his parents. He transitioned to his heavenly home on Monday, August 18, 2025.
Tim’s parents regarded education as a necessity and made sure he not only attended school, but also embraced it. He had perfect attendance for all twelve years of grade school, proving his determination and persistence in excelling academically. He was a very accomplished wrestler all four years of high school and graduated from Pinecrest High School in 1981. He then attended Central Carolina Community College and obtained an Associate’s Degree. Tim’s dream was to work for the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. He began his law enforcement career in 1984, when he joined the Moore County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy Sheriff, where he worked for three one-half years. His dream finally came true in 1987, when he began working for the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. He started as a Trooper serving in Cabarrus County, where he was promoted to Line Sergeant, and served in Guilford County. He was later promoted to First Sergeant and served in Person, Caswell, Moore, and Hoke Counties, and served in that capacity until his retirement in 2013, having served a total of 27 years. He then began working as a bailiff for the Moore County Court Facility. In total, Timothy served his state and community in law enforcement for almost 40 years.
Tim dedicated his life to Christ at an early age, and would often attend church with his father at Providence Presbyterian Church in Jackson Springs, NC, and with his mother at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in West End, NC. Timothy loved his home church, Providence Presbyterian Church, and it was evident in his commitment to the church. He was an Elder, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, and a very active Sunday School student. He was known for stepping in to fill the gaps. Whether that was mowing the grass, creating the weekly church programs, or delivering the morning message once a month. He recently started the Power Zone with God, which met every Monday to learn more about God.
Tim was a proud father, grandfather, brother, uncle, co-worker, and friend. Tim was an extremely hard worker. He was a team player and willing to help anyone. He liked going to the gym, writing songs and sermons, playing his guitar, riding motorcycles, and going to estate sales and thrift stores. One of his favorite pastimes was baking. He could make a mean POUND CAKE and won first place in a baking competition last year for his delicious cakes. He had a laugh that, when he was truly tickled, would fill a room and could be heard across the house or any establishment he was in. While people thought he was stoic and showed little emotion, he was full of love, laughter, joy, and a very unique sense of humor. If he was not enjoying westerns, country, or quartet music, or taking selfies and sending them to people, he was enjoying time spent with his favorite person, his granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Charles McNeil and Mack Simmons, and his sisters, Eunice S. Capel and Della S. Whitehead.
Those left to cherish fond memories and carry on his legacy are his daughter, Tremaine Simmons of Charlotte, NC; a son, Dwayne Simmons of Charlotte; a granddaughter, Aryanna Simmons of Charlotte; his former wife, who remained a devoted friend, Gayle Simmons of Robbins, NC; two sisters, Claudine Allen (Anthony) and Felecia Christian (Walter), both of Fayetteville, NC; five brothers, Horace Simmons Jr. (Cynthia) of Denver, Colorado, Milton Simmons of Eagle Springs, NC, Lazarus Simmons of Fayetteville, Joseph Simmons (Catherine) of Durham, NC, and Raymond Simmons of Stem, NC. He was also dearly loved by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, who will also cherish his memory and carry his legacy.

Tim was my Sergeant on the NCSHP in Greensboro and neighbor in the mid-1990’s. He was such an outstanding Christian man, mentor, neighbor, and friend! As a young Trooper, he was always approachable and willing to help out his Troopers without complaint. Tim always had a smile on his face and something funny to say. We had a lot of fun together on-duty and a lot of battles off-duty on the basketball court. I have so many fond memories of him that I will always cherish. Rest in peace. To the family, Nikki and I are praying for you guys and are so sorry for your loss. He will be missed a ton!
I sincerely pray that God will wrap each and every one of Tim’s family members and friends, in His precious, comforting arms, not only now but in the days to come as you reflect on his love, life and legacy. That his life here on earth will never be forgotten, but be remembered with genuine love, joy and sincere appreciattion.

FIRST Sgt. Simmions cared about all his members and friends with a big smile..He could bake good food and cook real well christmas party cakes for troop h.He was a true friend and helpul and friendly to all mankind!
I met Tim when I came to Greensboro as a Probationary Trooper in training. My first interaction with him was my first week investigating a 3 car crash that occurred in a busy 4-way intersection. Tim showed up and took over the traffic direction so my primary FTO could make sure I was investigating the crash properly. He told me “ I got this, you go investigate this crash”. I have many memories of him doing things like that for the Troopers in D2 the time he was there. An example of servant leadership every time I worked with him. Good man. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Our prayers and thoughts are with the Simmons family . I met Tim a few years ago in the cycling class we took together. He was very quiet and reserved. I learned that he loved teaching Bible study. He will be missed.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all, Tim’s legacy of love, kindness, and leadership will forever be remembered. May God continue to surround you with his Guardian Angels 💙💙💙
Tim Simmons was my supervisor during my tenure with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, and he also became a close friend with whom I shared many Saturday breakfasts alongside other friends. Tim was a God-fearing man who cherished his family deeply. He always greeted everyone with a smile and had a passion for baking sheet cakes that brought joy to our gatherings.
Tim exemplified leadership; he consistently did what was best for his colleagues and led by example. Breakfasts without him will never be the same again. For those who aren’t familiar with our bond, we spent more time together than most families do. He was truly a part of our family.
Every time I encountered Tim in the office or out in the field, I would say, “I love you F/SGT,” and it was always heartfelt. His Southern drawl and that big, warm smile made those words feel genuine. The memories we created together will always hold a special place in my heart.
May sweet and loving memories of Tim give you comfort and peace today and always.
To the entire Simmons Family I express my deepest sympathy for the loss of your brother. May God Bless you with continued fond and loving memories of your brother forever and ever.
