Luther C. Headen

Luther C. Headen

June 2, 1934 – April 16, 2023

Luther Carroll Alexander Headen was born on June 2,1934, to Will and Lula Belle Harris Headen in Taylortown, North Carolina, where he grew up with many siblings and cousins.

Luther attended Academy Heights High School and graduated in 1952. While in school, he was an outstanding basketball player and set many records. He also played baseball in Taylortown under the excellent coach, Johnny Boler. Luther enlisted in the United States Army after graduating from high school and served two years. Luther joined Spaulding Chapel AME Zion Church at an early age and remained a member there until his death. He was a member of Cornerstone Lodge #68 in Southern Pines, North Carolina, Prince Hall Affiliated, Free & Accepted Masons of North Carolina.

Luther was called many names by his family and friends – Luke, Daddy, Big Lute, Gus, Grandpa, Pops, Big Guy, Mr. Luther, and Brother Headen, to name a few. He married Shirley Caddell in 1956. They lived in Taylortown and raised their six children. He was a good provider. He would often sing in that deep baritone voice for his family.

In the community, Luther was friendly to all and never met a stranger. He was big in stature, and his heart was just as big. He loved helping people and would keep you laughing. He worked at the Sandhills Veterinary Hospital for over 50 years until he retired. He loved animals.

When his health began to fail, he moved to PEAK Health Facility in Carthage, NC. He received the best care while living there. So he was happy when his wife joined him about a year later. They shared the same room.

His parents and five siblings, Willie, Edward, Larry, Shannon, and Lewis, preceded him in death.

Luther leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Shirley Headen; his children, Reverend Angela Davis (Greg), Nadine Moody (Jef), Patricia Harris, Luther Headen Jr. (Cathy), Mark Headen, Robert Headen (Sean), and Robert Barrett (Charmaine); thirteen grandchildren, Nicholas (Keya) (whom they help to raise), Jessica (Shaun), Essica, Jeff, Everett (Kaneisha), Jasmine S. (Mike), Jade, Jasmine R, Mercedes, Stephon, Rashad, Yarona and Anita; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Jerry Headen, two sisters, Evelyn Brisbane and Oleta Curlee (Robert ); one sister-in-law, Hildeguard Headen; a daughter-in-law, Jackie Covington; those whom he treated as a daughter, Joan Faulkner and Apostle Andria Weekes Parker; special friends, Mabel Gaddy, Ulysses and Diane Barrett, Patrick, and Bertha Walker; past personal caregivers who were the best, Vivan, Alveda, Krissy, Debra, Diane, Paulette, Michele and Zina; his beloved “Prince,” this lil dog bought so much “JOY” to him; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

He will forever be missed, and his legacy of selfless love will live on in the lives of those he touched.
