The story of Jerrian Elizabeth Brooks began on April 25, 1978, in Pinehurst, North Carolina, near the county line. From the moment she arrived, named lovingly after her mother, grandmother, and father, it was clear she was destined to be unforgettable. And while some might debate who the “favorite” was, one thing is certain-her arrival forever changed the peaceful world of her oldest brother, Allen Brooks. Jerrian slipped into life with quiet brilliance and went on to touch every soul she encountered.

Born to Marian Brooks and the late Jerry Brooks of Robbins, NC, Jerrian lived boldly, adventurously, and unapologetically. She embraced life with a spirit that refused to be ordinary. She loved her family, the land, her animals, and the freedom of doing things her own way. As a child, she delighted in tormenting her younger brother Blake with games taught by their father-like “You’re in the Jailhouse Now”-and serenading him with songs such as “Waddle At Ya, Doddle Doo.” Her laughter and mischief were trademarks of her childhood and remained part of her charm throughout her life.

A graduate of North Moore High School, Jerrian went on to attend Fayetteville State University. She possessed a sharp business mind and excelled in every professional role she held. She broke barriers as the first African American female to work at Fidelity Bank in Robbins and later at Montjoy Insurance.

She continued to make her mark while serving as Executive Administrative Assistant to her brother and supporting operations at Love Life Counseling. Most recently, she was employed by the Carolina Inn/Pinehurst Hotel.

Jerrian was a woman of many passions. She raised horses and dreamed of creating an equine therapeutic retreat center. She became an herbalist, sharing her knowledge of holistic healing with family and friends. Like her father, she loved farming, nature, and growing crops-who would have ever imagined she’d follow so closely in his footsteps?

Her nephews and niece were the joy of her life. She poured into them with pride, love, and unwavering encouragement. Hardworking, creative, motivated, and deeply inspirational, Jerrian had a gift for uplifting others. She challenged people to be their best and carried an optimism that never seemed to fade, even in adversity. She mastered the art of turning challenges into stepping stones and lived with a heart full of generosity, humor, and resilience. To many, she was the favorite cousin, the trusted friend, the one who made everything brighter.

Her father often joked, “That girl left and didn’t say bye.” And in true Jerrian fashion, she slipped away just as she slipped in-quietly, quickly, and entirely on her own terms-leaving behind a life-changing impact that will never be forgotten. She will be deeply and forever missed.

It was such an honor to work with Jerri at the Carolina Hotel. She created a welcoming and wholesome energy the moment she started working with us. Whenever I would see her at the front bar at the start of my shift I knew it would be a good time. She would blast throwback songs and make me and others specialty mocktails and coffees. She truly brightened my day and inspired me to be full of love for everybody. I wish I could have gotten to know her more. Jerri will be deeply missed at the Carolina. My condolences to her family and friends.

Jerrian was an absolutely amazing friend and colleague I have had the short pleasure of knowing. We would spend our time day dreaming of other places and sharing what cocktails we would sip together; painting vivid backdrops and scenery we would share. We would then make those cocktails for each other and share them with our team. It was beautiful and little magical; just as she was. She was inspiring, uplifting, and genuinely positive and caring; our perfect greeter for every guest that walked past her bar as a “welcome to my home”; for she really did make The Carolina Hotel feel homier when she was there. It was a privilege to work with her and an honor more to become her friend and earn her most sacred trust; for as bright as she was, she was also a little bit of a loner and selective to whom she shared herself with and I will treasure my time I had with her dearly. My condolences to her family and friends; it truly was a blessing to know her.

Jerrian was one of my 8th grade science students early on in my teaching career at Elise Middle School. Her dad subbed for me a few times when I needed to be away. Her brother, Blake, was also a student of mine later. I haven’t seen Jerrian in several years, but I remember her as a fun loving young lady, who always had a smile on her face. I am so sorry to hear of her passing! Prayers for her family and friends.
