September 2, 1938 – October 13, 2025
Hulia Mae Bowden Baldwin, affectionately known as “Mae,” was born on September 2, 1938, in Richmond County, North Carolina, to the late Grover Sr. and Isabella Bowden. Mae peacefully entered eternal rest on October 13, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Mae spent many dedicated years working in the textile industry before serving as a custodian for Montgomery County Schools. No matter the job, Mae gave her best with a smile, a strong work ethic, and a heart full of care for everyone around her. She was proud of where she came from, born and raised in Richmond County, and later made her home in Mount Gilead, North Carolina, where her warmth and generosity continued to touch countless lives. Mae was a proud member of Parson Grove Baptist Church in X-Way North Carolina until her health declined.
Mae was married to the late James Edward Baldwin, with whom she shared two beautiful daughters, the late Arlene Baldwin and Tammy Baldwin Sturdivant. Mae also held a special place in her heart for her nephew, Darren Bowden, whom she loved as a son.
Family was Mae’s greatest joy. She poured love into every meal she cooked and every moment she shared. She was the definition of hospitality; her door was always open, though she’d quickly remind you, “Make sure you lock that door and close those blinds!” Mae was nurturing, protective, and wise, always checking on her family’s safety and well-being. She had a knack for making sure everyone was fed and cared for.
Mae was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Grover Sr. and Isabella Bowden; her siblings, Betty Ann Bowden, her twin Hubert Bowden, Marvin Bowden, and Grover Bowden Jr.; her husband, James Edward Baldwin; and her daughter, Arlene Baldwin.
Mae leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and care. She is cherished and remembered by her daughter, Tammy Sturdivant (William); her grandchildren, Cecilie Sturdivant, DanQuan Sturdivant (Rashana Pemberton), and Courtney Sturdivant; and her greatgrandchildren, Zuri Sturdivant-Watkins, David Watkins, Camron Sturdivant, and Royalty Watkins. She also leaves her loving sister, Doreatha Armstrong, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will deeply miss her warmth and humor.
